About Roanoke
Roanoke () is an independent city in the u.s. State of virginia. At the 2010 census, the population was 97,032. It is located in the roanoke valley of the roanoke region of virginia. Roanoke is the largest municipality in southwest virginia, and is the principal municipality of the roanoke metropolitan statistical area, which had a 2010 population of 308,707. It is composed of the independent cities of roanoke and salem, and botetourt, craig, franklin, and roanoke counties. Bisected by the roanoke river, roanoke is the commercial and cultural hub of much of southwest virginia and portions of southern west virginia. According to the united states census bureau, the city has a total area of 42.9 square miles, of which 42.5 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water. At the 2000 census, there were 94,911 people, 42,003 households and 24,235 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,213.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 69.38% white, 26.74% african american, 0.20% native american, 1.15% asian, 0.02% pacific islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races.
