According to the united states census bureau, the city has a total area of 26.57 square miles, of which 26.07 square miles are land and 0.50 square miles, or 1.87%, are water. The mississippi river forms the eastern boundary of the city, separating it from coon rapids and fridley in anoka county. As of the census of 2010, there were 75,781 people, 26,229 households, and 18,763 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,906.8 inhabitants per square mile. There were 27,841 housing units at an average density of 1,067.9 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 52.2% white, 24.4% african american, 0.5% native american, 15.4% asian, 0.1% pacific islander, 3.6% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races.
