Edinburg is part of the mcallen-edinburg-mission and reynosa-mcallen metropolitan areas. Edinburg is located in south-central hidalgo county at 261815n98950w to the south and west. Population as of the census of 2000, there were 48,465 people, 14,183 households, and 11,417 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,296.9 people per square mile.
