Active Threat Response Training for Schools

Active Threat Response Training is a must for all educational institutions. Locknow training modules have been developed by school administrators who have been in the field for years. Using our experience, we can prepare your staff, incorporate strategies and enable your campus to implement an immediate on campus response to any threat. We provide a comprehensive evaluation of focal points to prepare for active threat situations and keep our people as safe as possible.

1. Introduction to School Safety & Threats to School Safety

This module provides an overview of the unique security challenges schools face in keeping our kids safe. We explore the evolution of response plans and strategies for potential intruder situations, resulting in actionable plans that enable both staff and congregation to minimize harm and respond effectively.   We will touch on past church attacks and what we can learn from them.

2. The Nature of Active Threats

Participants will understand common intruder motives. We will actively discuss causes and motivations of active threat attacks as well as the targets they typically seek out.  Understanding these motivations and behaviors can help in developing effective response plans and strategies to minimize harm and respond swiftly. This module emphasizes the importance of situational awareness and early threat detection.

3. Building a Culture of Awareness

School Safety is a collective responsibility, we fully subscribe to the “it takes everyone” philosophy.  We evaluate what constitutes suspicious behavior and how to recognize it.  This module teaches participants how to foster a culture of vigilance, encouraging staff and students to report suspicious activity. Strategies for establishing communication for everyone to report suspicious behavior.

  4. Physical Security Layers

Practical security measures are covered, such as utilizing ID badges, security cameras, lighting, and access control.  We explore how everyone can work together to enhance overall facility safety.  Effective communication and coordination among team members ensure that everyone is aware of their specific roles and responsibilities in preventing attacks and responding to an emergency.   We discuss the effectiveness of technology resources such as security alarms, apps, and radios into their safety plans to enhance communication and response times.

5. Communication Protocols

Effective communication during a crisis is critical. We will examine incidents where communication breakdowns affected a facility’s response to active threats.  This module focuses on establishing clear, concise communication protocols while using tools like radios, emergency apps (such as LockNow), and intercoms. Real-world examples, such as incidents in Parkland and Uvalde, highlight the importance of immediate, multi-channel communication.  We will review your current communication methods and identify any areas for improvement.

6. Active Threat Response: Run, Hide, Fight

The “Run, Hide, Fight” strategy forms the backbone of this module and this training, guiding participants in their actions during a lockdown or active threat response. Key considerations include when it’s safe to run, how to effectively hide and secure a location, and how to defend oneself as a last resort.   We will guide your team in the decision-making process of Run, Hide, Fight.   It is in this module that your people begin to think strategically about active threat response.    Instead of hiding under tables, we are now developing a proactive action plan!

A deliberate evaluation of Run, Hide, Fight options in your church spaces.   We will discuss key factors that your staff can prepare in your facility to enable a faster decision and implementation of each of the response actions.   Your team will engage in tactical demonstrations covering escape techniques, methods to reinforce and barricade spaces, and self-defense strategies. We prepare your team with a plan of action.     This module has heavy focus on lockdown practices or securing in place.   This module will empower your people.

7. Practical Demonstrations

Hands-on participation is a crucial part of preparation. Participants will practice lockdown procedures, evaluating Run, Hide, Fight strategies, and communication protocols in realistic scenarios. These exercises help reinforce the learning objectives and ensure participants are confident in their ability to respond quickly and effectively.

8. Continued Improvement

Following any incident or drill, there is typically something to be learned. This module guides participants through evaluating their actions, identifying gaps in communication or procedures, and making necessary adjustments to their security plans to prevent future incidents.   We discuss how to evaluate yourselves and work toward improvement!
