Bangor. Modern bangor was established in the mid-1800s with the lumber and shipbuilding industries. According to the united states census bureau, the city has a total area of 34.59 square miles, of which 34.26 square miles is land and 0.33 square miles is water. As of 2008, bangor is the third most populous city in maine, as it has been for more than a century. As of 2012, the estimated population of the bangor metropolitan area, because of the presence of two large hospitals
