In today’s environment, churches in Gary must be prepared for many types of emergencies, including the unlikely but serious threat of an active shooter. A clear and well-rehearsed plan can save lives and reduce confusion during a crisis. Locknow Safety supports faith communities with panic alert systems and comprehensive active threat training. Our goal is to help protect your congregation. Below is a practical guide to assist in building a complete active threat response plan for your church in Gary.

1. Identify and Analyze Potential Threats in Gary

To build a strong safety plan, begin by identifying vulnerabilities throughout your church property in Gary and involve your entire safety team in the assessment. Law enforcement and local authorities in Gary can offer expert recommendations, while volunteers experienced in safety roles often recognize risks others may overlook. A comprehensive evaluation relies on a broad set of perspectives.

  • Entrances and Exits: Review all doorways, exit paths, and potential congestion areas in emergency conditions. Think through situations that could require securing in place, sheltering, or evacuation. Evaluate how people typically move through the building and how the surrounding environment affects safety.
  • Interior Layout: Help your team learn the layout of worship spaces, classrooms, and offices so they can identify safe zones or escape routes. Locknow Safety Training offers guidance on effectively using interior space for safety and confidence during emergencies.
  • Security Gaps: Look for weak areas without sufficient surveillance, access control, or communication options. Review your security team’s responsibilities on service days to determine where improvements can be made.

About Gary

Gary is a city in lake county, indiana, united states, 25 miles from downtown chicago, illinois. Gary is adjacent to the indiana dunes national park and borders southern lake michigan. Gary was named after lawyer elbert henry gary, who was the founding chairman of the united states steel corporation. The city is known for its large steel mills, and as the birthplace of the jackson 5 music group. The population of gary was 80,294 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in the state of indiana. It was a prosperous city from the 1920s through the mid-1960s due to its booming steel industry, but overseas competition and restructuring of the steel industry resulted in a decline and a severe loss of jobs. Since the late 1960s, gary has suffered drastic population loss, falling by 55 percent from its peak of 178,320 in 1960. The city faces the difficulties of many rust belt cities, including unemployment, decaying infrastructure, and low literacy and educational attainment levels. It is estimated that nearly one-third of all houses in the city are unoccupied or abandoned. The city is located at the southern end of the former lake bed of the prehistoric lake chicago, and the current lake michigan. Most of the city’s soil, to nearly one foot below the surface, is pure sand. The sand beneath gary, and on its beaches, is of such high quality that in years past it was mined for the manufacture of glass. The change in the economy and resulting loss of jobs has caused a drop in population by more than half since its peak in 1960.
