Lynchburg is an independent city in the commonwealth of virginia in the united states. As of the 2010 census, the population was 75,568. The 2017 census estimates an increase to 81,000. Located in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains along the banks of the james river, lynchburg is known as the or the. In the 1860s, lynchburg was the only major city in virginia that was not recaptured by the union before the end of the american civil war. Lynchburg lies at the center of a wider metropolitan area close to the geographic center of virginia. It is the fifth-largest msa in virginia, with a population of 260,320. It is the site of several institutions of higher education, including virginia university of lynchburg, university of lynchburg, randolph college, and liberty university. Nearby cities include roanoke, charlottesville, and danville. According to the united states census bureau, the city has a total area of 49.6 square miles, of which 49.2 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. As of the 2010 census, there were 75,568 people, 25,477 households, and 31,992 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,321.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 63.0% white, 29.3% african american, 0.2% native american, 2.5% asian, 0.04% pacific islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.
